IBS and Amitriptyline, anybody taking it? Any general IBS advice also welcome!? I have been to see my doctor today as I am at my wits end with constant stomach cramps/bloated/pains etc (which I have had on and off for the past 12 years!) and wanted to find out if it was IBS. Anyway, with the symptoms I have described to him, and the fact that I tried a wheat and lactose free diet a few months ago, he has 'confirmed' that it is indeed, most likely, IBS. He has prescribed Amitriptyline (10mg) for me to take each night, and I wondered if anybody had any experience of this drug for IBS, and any unwated side effects? I know it's a low dose, but I am rather hoping it might help wih my anxiety and depression (usually worse around that time of the month!) too!!?? Just one last thing about IBS, does anybody suffer with chronic groin pain on the left side? I have been been into the hospital 3 times for this pain in the past, thinking it was a urine infection but today found out it's probably intestine spasms. I still get this pain to a lesser degree (but still very uncomfortable) but dread it getting that bad again. Any advice more than welcome! Just to add - as anybody found that being vegetarian or vegan has made their IBS symptoms worse? I'm not a vege, although I used to be not so long ago. I have totally cut out Quorn as I just can't stand the after effects! Lol. And also, beans are a nightmare - which I used to eat a lot more of when I was vege. I think if I were Vegan I would simply explode :-) Meghan - any support group suggestions? I have researched IBS quite a bit, but it's always nice to know your not alone. Any advice is always helpful, and any new suggestions.

Meghan replied: "I had suffered with IBS for years until I saw a new doctor for it. He encouraged me to keep a food journal and chart my symptoms. It turned out that for me, it wasn't necessarily certain foods, but certain food combinations that triggered my issues. I also noticed a considerable lack of fiber in my diet. With some minor changes, and alot of evaluation on my part, I was able to make my life almost 100% symptom free. I've recently joined an IBS support group, and have talked to other people who have had problems with food combinations as well. I would tell you to do some research, find a support group if you can, and chart everything. It's difficult and a pain in the butt to do, but the results are worth it. If nothing else, join the support group to know that this is a common problem and you aren't alone in your struggle."

dwin702000 replied: "I actually took that drug for delayed emptying syndrome......my stomach doesn't empty right and I was always bloated and in pain and throwing up all the time. I had an emptying test done and it showed my stomach not working right. I was on amitrip for about a month or two and all it did was make me so tired even taking it at night but I also take other meds that make me tired so this just added to it. No other side effects though and it didnt help my situation....the pain the bloating or anything. I have been on erythramiacine 250 mg twice a day and that helps so much no more bloating or pain or throwing up and I have been on it for about 6 months......about the pain in your left side.....I had the same thing two different times.....the first time it was fluid in my falopian tube from a cyst that burst open and the second time it was because my ovary was somehow stuck to my colon WEIRD I KNOW........but see your ob/gyn and see if they want to do exploratory surgery where they go with a scope into the belly button, that is how they found out what my pain was and it isnt all that bad.......good luck with all that"

tootie replied: "try peppermint capsules they really help me. and pmt seemeed tomake my ibs worse"

I was just prescribed Amitriptyline 10mg at night for severe pain related to IBS.? I am also bi-polar and have done the anti-depresant thing and gained lots of weight. I'm finally back to my normal weight and have energy again because my doc put me on a mood-stabilizer that works. I'm afraid if I take the Amitriptyline, I will gain all the weight back. I'm not in pain all the time but when it hits, it is excruciating and can go on for hours to days. Just so you know - I'm 47, female, I exercise regularly, eat healthy, don't smoke or drink, meditate and do bio-feedback. The IBS is something I have had all my life and it only shows up during times of high emotional stress and then lasts for a couple of months. So I don't want to take something all the time for a problem that comes and goes. I would appreciate any insight. Thanks

Patti C replied: "I gained weight from Amitriptyline but I was taking 150 mg every night. Mine was used as a migraine preventative. I was a little overweight to start with though. My sister was prescribed Amitriptyline for sleep several years later; she also gained weight from it and she started out very slender. I would give it a chance though. I was taking 15 times the amount that you are taking. And the weight gain is gradual. If you are watching your weight you will be able to catch it and control it. Also from what I have read the weight gain from Amitriptyline comes from an increased desire for sweets. So you can control that. I was unaware of this when I started the medication. All in all, for me, the benefits I was getting from the medication was better than the inconvenience of the side effects."

Effects of Amitriptyline? I'm going to be taking Amitriptyline for IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) and I'm a little worried about the side effects. Could somebody who's taken it for that purpose tell me about it? Thanks!

My doctor told me I have IBS- what kind of diet is best for someone with this and how are you dealing with IBS If you have IBS-how are dealing how bad are your symptoms? I feel like I can't go anywhere because I am not sure if it will flare up...doctor put me on amitriptyline hcl 10mg a night.

krennao replied: "Pretty much is stay away from foods that will act it up. You would know what foods those are, if not start making a list."

pennypincher replied: "Mine does not act up anymore. What helped me most was keeping a food diary and figuring out exactly which foods made me sick. Mine is caused by several food intolerances. Sometimes it can be 12 hours between the time I eat the food to when I get sick. My symptoms were so bad that I had to crawl from the bed to the bathroom."

Bubbles replied: "My dad has IBS, he takes aloe vera juice every morning. He takes it on its own but if you don't like the taste you can put it in orange juice."

TweetyBird replied: "This would depend on the symptoms you experience. If you have the kind of IBS asscociated with more diarrhea than constipation, use the link below: If you have the type of IBS associated with more constipation than diarrhea, use the next link: "

memommy33 replied: "I have IBS along with Crohn's and Barrett's Esophagus. For me when I have flair ups is when I'm under alot of stress, plus different foods. I usually avoid spicy foods, greasy foods, and when my IBS is acting up, I avoid milk products. For me, unfortunately, Crohn's is my main problem with IBS as a secondary. I hope you find the right combination of foods you can enjoy and be able to go out and enjoy your life. Being afraid of the flareups can cause more of them to aggrevate your lifestyle. My flare ups are rare now that I"m on the right medications, but when it does flare up, I usually end up in the ER with a medication readjustment. Just watch your foods, and when you go out to eat, remember, "Special Order" and you will do just fine."

Dr. Gregg replied: "There is no single diet prescription that works for everyone. However, you might have success by limiting simple carbohydrates (sugars, starches) and focusing on fruit & vegetables for fiber and micronutrients, and meat/dairy/eggs/beans for protein and calories. Whole grains and beans or lentils contain fiber as well as complex carbohydrates. Avoid rice, pastas and potatoes for a while to see if this will help. Dairy products can also contribute to the gas, pain and cramping of IBS. Try eliminating them for a while, then slowing re-introduce items like hard cheeses (for example, cheddar) and yogurt with active cultures to see what you can tolerate. You can also try the elimination diet approach. Start by eliminating one food at a time to see if your symptoms improve. This can be slow, and most foods are not "pure"; that is, the consist of multiple things (carbs, protein, fat, fiber, spices, etc.), so it is hard to figure out exactly what is causing the problem."

lexapro and amitriptyline? been on amitriptyline for five years 25mgs for ibs. helps ibs but not depression. got extremely agitated and angry and cursed all of my friends. was put on .5 leaxpro for one week now. seems to help anxiety but i am more depressed. i cant get out of bed. sleeping all day and all night. anyone else experienced this? and what did you do if you have.

blaze23 replied: "Lexapro causes extreme drowsiness. Take it at night before you go to bed. Found this out the hard way, when I was taking it."

John replied: "Dont try to diagnose yourself on yahoo answers. Everyone responds to different drugs differently. The only way to know if it works for you is to try it under the supervision of a licensed psychiatrist."

earlyout replied: "I've been on lexapro for about 6 years. It works for me. Stopped taking it once and noticed the difference within a few days. Went back on it."

lil sammy replied: "I tried Lexapro last week. I had the same thing with sleeping all the time, then the vomiting and runs started. My doctor told me to quit after 5 days when I called. Taking it at night made no difference. That's just my experince, it helps a lot of folks. But I feel at least you should be able to remain functional while starting a new med. It has taken two days to leave my system. Today is the first day I will leave the house in one week because of my try. Not good. Call your doctor, like this afternoon. good luck!!!"

U'vGot2Bkid'en replied: "Take it at night. A lot of doctors prescribe this not only for anxiety but for insomnia associated with depression/anxiety. It causes you to be be very sleepy, don't take it during the day."

Dont_lie! replied: "Take it at night, it helps you sleep better. You'll be real tired all day if you take it during the day. Keep in mind that it takes 6-8 weeks for full effect, so the depression may still get better, its only been a week."

Um..Yah replied: "Take it at night. It takes longer for full effect, it will get better."

Only_the_Truth replied: "Take it before bed."

Has anyone gained weight from taking the 25mg pills of amitriptyline? I have been on 10mg of amitriptyline for 2 months to help me cope with the symptoms of severe IBS. They had no effect so my doctor put me on a higher dosage of 25mg. I am not overweight but have been trying to slim down a little more lately however since taking the higher dosage for only a week I have actually gained about 3lbs despite eating more healthily than usual and exercising as much as ever (3-4 times a week). Has anyone else gained weight at this dosage and did you find a way around it other than stop taking the medication? The pills are supposed to be controlling my anxiety not making it worse from stressing about this! My doctor said they could cause weight gain as when patients start to feel well they tend to eat more but I'm not feeling well yet or eating more so I'm confused. Can anyone identify with this? Thanks! (PS no acai berry/spammy answers please)

rosieC replied: "Amitriptyline (Elavil, Endep) is a tricyclic antidepressant drug. SIDE EFFECTS: Sometimes troublesome side effects include fast heart rate, blurred vision, urinary retention, dry mouth, constipation,WEIGHT GAIN or loss, and low blood pressure on standing. Rash, hives, seizures, and hepatitis are rare side effects. The reason most antidepressants make you gain weight is because it depresses your metabolism. If amitriptyline is discontinued abruptly, dizziness, headache, nausea, and restlessness may occur. Withdrawal symptoms may occur when even a few doses are missed. Therefore, it is recommended that the dose of antidepressant be reduced gradually when therapy is discontinued. The Antidepressants I'm on right now also makes me gain weight. To address this problem as you do need the med for your anxiety; you have to eat small portions and the right kinds of foods. Exercise and drink a lot of fluids."

Taniyah replied: "A lot of people don't realize all the health benefits of the Acai Berry. Oprah has had Dr. OZ on her show talking about how it is a superfood. The vitamins and anti-oxidents it contains allow rapid weight loss in many people. There are even reports of people losing 40-50lbs in 3 months using Acai."

Side-Effects of taking Anti-Depressants...? I am taking 1/2 a pill of an anti-depressant to help my Irribitable Bowel Syndrome. I guess I have a nervous stomach, but because it is alot cheaper and less side-effects of the official IBS medication, my doctor suggested I take 1/2 pill of the anti depressnt called Amitriptyline. What are some changes that I will notice? Besdies not being sick from my stomach? I am starting to notice that I don't want to have sex as often as before, is this normal?

confuzzled replied: "I suffer from IBS too but have never been offered an anti depressant to help. I take a product called mintes, the mint is meant to soothe your tummy and it does work for me..but if im desperate and have no mintec then i just suck on some normal mints..personally i prefer spearmint Good luck"

the_only_solorose replied: "Amitriptyline, aka Elavil, is only designed for use over the short term, it is highly addictive, so be careful in it's use. As for your irritable bowel syndrome, have you tried Bentyl? I find it very effective in controlling mine, and it is safe to use over the long term. (it is also inexpensive) Elavil can give you dry mouth, it can increase your appetite, it can make you very sleepy and tired during the day."

Baron replied: "Antidepressants can often cause side effects, and an inability to tolerate these is the most common cause of discontinuing an otherwise working medication. Side effects of SSRIs: Nausea, diarrhea, headaches. Sexual side effects are also common with SSRIs, such as loss of libido, failure to reach orgasm and erectile problems. Seratonergic syndrome is also a worrying condition associated with the use of SSRIs. Side effects of TCAs (tricyclic antidepressants): Fairly common side effects include dry mouth, blurred vision, drowsiness, dizziness, tremors, sexual problems, skin rash, and weight gain or loss. Mary L replied: "Hmmmm. Well, I took amytriptyline for many years, although it was being used as a preventative for migraine headaches. It didn't provide much help, by the way. I've been on one antidepressant or another for about 30 years. I'm female. My desire for sex is the same, however I haven't had an orgasm in at least 5 years ... maybe 10. It makes me a little sad to have this side effect, but I suppose I'm willing for the tradeoff. I don't want to jump off a skyscraper anymore ... It doesn't sound like you are taking enough to see any side effects."

ANGEL3Y35 replied: "I took elavil to help prevent migraines and it just made me really tired but anti depressants act differently on everyone. I take levbid (hyoscymaine sulfate) for my IBS and have had no side effects and is less than 15 bucks a month"

Any help out there? Any hope? ? Hello i dont know where to start here, but I have anxiety.depression and IBS. i fell ill 3 years ago and since then ive suffered lots and lots of panic attacks. the doctor told me i have agoraphobia and now i live on my own defending for myself. but my anxiety seems to get worse. I have tryed counselling but i panicked right through the whole session and was ill for a week and never went back after that. I have been in realtionships and i am in a current one because i just want to rid this anxiety and settle down but everytime i think about my boyfriend i panic as i havent met him yet and hes talking about moving down here to be closer when i need him. when i first fell ill i was living with my bf ( not current because we split a year ago ) and i needed space and pushed him away then moved home. i just dont know what to do and all i think about is suicide :( Im scared to go out incase i get ill as panic attacks kinda trigger my IBS. and when people work around my flat i panic. i panic around my own mother too. im scared of soo many litle things.. like.. im petrifed of buses because i had my first panic attack on one. scared of taxis incase it breaks down and im stuck.scared of queuein up places cuz of panicking and feeling trapped. i have read books on way to calm it. Ive tried anxiety tablets to ease it but doctor took me off them saying they addcitive ( diazephan ) and am currently depending on my 'amitriptyline' like i have been for 3 years. i dont know what to do anymore!! i feel like i aint in control of my own life , i cant even have a relationship without being scared of him.. I dont want to feel this at all because i love him. if anyone is out there that could help me.. maybe if youre going through the same or have been there and beat it , please would you talk to me? :( i get people telling me that i will beat it one day but i see no hope at all! i wanna settle down and have kids as ive had miscarridges and a bad past and just want to find happiness at last . i dont know how much more i can take because its just taking over my life and its painfull. thank you to anyone who reads this and im sorry its so long and detailed. Vicky ( )

barbara g replied: "First you have to decide if your desire to settle down and have a family overrides your agoraphobia. You have to figure out a way for you to slowly get out again, and the only way to do that is to trust someone. Like your mom. You need someone who you can trust to keep you focused from point A to point B ( from your flat to the psychologist and back ) until you can make these treks on your own. But it is you who have to decide to take those first baby steps and trust. Because you are going to have to make a leap of faith if you are going to find that someone to settle down with and have a family."

I am going to see a Dr, but I wonder if anybody has experienced this...? I have been diagnosed with IBS about 6 years ago. This is fairly mild to moderate and is controlled by diet and sometimes a small dose of amitriptyline. Recently, however, I have had mild diarrhea ongoing for about 4 weeks now. I'm losing weight (not massive amounts, but enough that people tell me I look like I'm losing weight) and I'm not even trying to. Also, very recently (past 3 times I've washed my hair) I have noticed more than normal hair loss. I know that the head sheds about 100 hairs a day, but I'm talking about whole locks of hair (20 plus strands each) that come out when I am washing my hair. I AM going to see a Dr. But in the meantime, I was hoping that someone else has had this problem, how they were diagnosed, medical tests performed, and outcomes. I'm kinda scared about this. Thanks.

theresad replied: "well depending on the diet your trying to manage your ibs you might be a little malnourished and that could be why your loosing your hair as for the diarrhea that's just part of the ibs"

galloppal replied: "One of the causes of female hair loss is malnutrition. Since you have had diarrhea for 4 weeks, you may be experiencing malabsorption of some nutrients that is leading to the hair loss. I don't know that this is common, but it is one thought on it. You may want to have it checked out."
